Comprehensive Eye Care In Medford, Oregon

Routine Eye Examination Recommendations for All Ages
Having regular eye exams helps you achieve the best vision possible and keeps your eyes healthy by checking for diseases and conditions that may or may not present symptoms. Your appointment will include time for a personal medical history and specialized tests as needed. You eyes may be dilated, which allows our doctors to carefully examine your retina.

Pediatric Eye Care. Good vision is essential for children to properly develop and learn. Early detection of vision problems or eye disease provides the best option for treatment and outcomes. Our medical doctors provide care for a wide variety of pediatric ocular problems and visual disorders in children such as crossed eyes (strabismus) or lazy eye (amblyopia.)

In fact, Dr. Rutar is currently the only fellowship-trained pediatric and strabismus specialist in Southern Oregon, specializing in conditions that include strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and cataracts in adults and children.

In the first three years, infants should have their vision checked as part of regular pediatric checkups. Between ages three and six, an eye exam every year or two is recommended. Throughout childhood and the teenage years, exams should be scheduled every two years.

People between the ages of 20 and 39 usually only need eye examinations if a noticeable change in vision occurs. However, people in this age group who wear corrective lenses should schedule an annual exam.

Beginning at age 40, regular eye exams should be scheduled at least every two years or annually if using corrective lenses.

Starting at 65, yearly exams are recommended to rule out glaucoma, cataracts or other age-related eye diseases.

Our medical doctors may recommend a different schedule if you have certain eye problems, diseases, or risk factors.

For example:
  • Diabetes (Type 1 and 2) - Annual Eye Exam
  • Pregnant Diabetics - Examination every three months throughout pregnancy
  • Glaucoma - Annual Eye Exam if you have risk factors for glaucoma, such as African American descent or a family history of the disease. We offer Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).
  • You should also schedule an appointment if you are experiencing any of the following:
  • Blurred vision or eyestrain
  • Eye pain
  • Red eyes
  • Blind spots
  • Headaches
  • Any other eye problem or sudden change in vision

Many eye diseases and problems have no early warning symptoms. Routine exams enable us to detect and treat vision problems and are the best safeguard for maintaining good vision. If you have questions about our comprehensive eye care or want to know how often you should schedule an exam please contact us.

"This place is filled with staff who values everyone who walks into their office. They take their time to show every patient the same level of excellence care and service. As response to the negative comments, I for one don't want anyone rushing to get me out the door, without full proper correction of what ever brought me in to their office. The office management, Janice and Paula have always been friendly and make sure that they have had great staff to provide only the best."

"I’ve purchased two pairs of prescription Oakleys from the optical shop here, one sunglasses and the other progressives. They had an excellent selection of both high-end and budget frames and Gary and Jenny were very helpful in choosing and fitting the frames. Both sets of glasses turned out great—amazingly clear and comfortable! Highly recommended!"

"I could not be more pleased by the treatment I received from Dr. Rutar and her staff. She performed two cataract surgeries for me and each time she carefully explained all the options and risks along with the likely outcomes. I was completely confident in her approach, as well as in her staff, who are very pleasant and professional."
